Digging potatoes is physically demanding but rewarding work. Here’s a good crop of ‘heather’ and ‘cliff’s kidney’ potatoes. Dug today, sown at the beginning of November. They’ll store well, possibly until the first new potatoes in December. I keep them in calico bags somewhere cool, dry, dark and mouse-free. Not a green one in sight thanks to heavy mulching with seaweed. Chooks loved the small ones, cooked up.
I sowed lupin seed as a green manure in the empty bed. I hope there will be enough warmth in the soil to allow it to germinate. There’s certainly enough moisture.
Dwarf green beans sown after Christmas have just started producing a lovely crop of fresh beans. Somehow they taste better than even the young beans from the old plants. Delicious in a bean and rocket salad. No parmesan in the fridge, but a shaving or two of Linkwater aged cheddar did very nicely thank you. A complete meal with a slice of Swedish rye bread.
