Here are some more or less gardening related gift ideas, to add to last year’s ten vegetable gardening gift ideas. I’ll send a gift card if you’d like to give someone a place on the fresh food garden course. Next one is Saturday 28 January 2012.
The best pair of secateurs money can buy – everyone one loses a pair (or ten) in their lifetime.
A sprouting jar and seeds – for salad sprouts to take with you on summer holidays or when outdoor gardening is impossible.
A fruit tree. With dwarf root stocks even the smallest garden can fit one, espaliered if necessary.
A bantam hen – collect her eggs while you wait for her to go broody and raise your own chicks from fertile eggs.
A mushroom growing kit or mushroom bucket – makes fungus in your laundry into a good thing. Here are the results from my oyster mushroom experiment.
A scarecrow motion-activated water sprinkler to deter cats, rabbits and possums from your garden.
A tap timer for your hose or sprinkler. Somewhere along the line you’re bound to leave it on otherwise.
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream. If it’s good enough for Norwegian fishermen, it’s good enough for me. Neither luxurious nor expensive but it works.
An organiser for your handbag or baby bag. I warned you some weren’t that related to gardening.
A smoker if you fancy taking up smoking your own food regularly. I’ll experiment with smoked garlic in the new year. The lovely people at Otaki Hunting and Fishing will be able to advise you on all your outdoor needs.
