heritage potatoes like classic cars

Classic cars have their appeal. They can be reliable, comfortable, quiet, luxurious, fast, spacious and economical. But generally they’re not. Or at least, not all at the same time.

Heritage potatoes can be prolific, disease resistant and hardy. But often not. I grow pink fir apple and la ratte potatoes and they do taste delicious. Perfect in a salad with home made mayonnaise. I find modern potato varieties much easier to grow and they produce many, large, perfect tubers. They taste superb too. I haven’t done a blind tasting to see which I prefer.

There will always be enthusiasts for whom transport has to be a classic car. They are prepared to forgive the shortcomings in return for the stylish appeal (or something like that). Same goes for heritage potatoes. If you find it’s interesting and challenging to grow them, enjoy them. If you want to get from A to B in comfort and security, try something modern.
